Dionicia Martinez-Magana

Choosing a diverse community to raise her family, Dionicia Martinez and her husband bought their forever home in Blue Island 3 years ago. Having lived in the south suburbs for over 30 years, Dionicia graduated from University of Illinois at Chicago in Secondary Education and is currently working on her master’s degree in Educational Leadership and Social Justice. As a first-generation college graduate, Dionicia was strongly inspired by her educational leaders growing up.

Currently working as a social science teacher at Thornwood High School, Dionicia has worked in the field of education for the last 10 years. Volunteering in the Chicago Public Schools as an America Reads Program Tutor and as an ESL tutor at Lincoln Elementary School in Dixmoor, Dionicia believes that educators have a significant impact on both students as well as the community’s success.

As Dionicia is deeply committed to serving her students, she has gained an understanding for the obstacles many students and teachers face on a daily basis. Her experience as a secondary education teacher has opened her eyes to the necessity of research-based solutions and lack of opportunities in school districts. With a focus on underserved students and those who need extra help to succeed, Dionicia is determined to make decisions for the school district that prioritize teachers and students and not special interests. Currently expecting her first child, Dionicia looks forward to becoming a part of the educational growth and success of District 130.
